India is a vast country with a splendid array of cuisine as diverse as its multiethnic population. The palate of India varies widely from one region to another; from the delicately spiced and aromatic Biriyanis of the North, to the savory and hot Vindaloos of the South.
India’s regional cooking has been shaped by its history, geography, and local produce. Foreign occupations, over centuries, have also greatly influenced the cuisine. From the invaders of the North who came from Persia and Afghanistan, to the Portuguese who ruled Goa, to the British Raj that lasted two hundred years, all have left their mark on the subcontinent’s culture and foods. Add to that the many distinct ethnic fish and vegetarian dishes of the East and the South; and a cornucopia of offerings emerges, bursting with flavors that have captivated diners through the ages.
Mrs. Mala Mitra and Mrs. Anita Mitra have been cooking and entertaining guests for many years, bringing the tastes of India to their own tables. In 2011, they decided to collaborate on a restaurant concept that would serve these regional dishes in a modern and elegant setting, graced by traditional Indian hospitality. The result is Chutney & Co. Our dining room with its tin ceiling and brocade walls evokes the grandeur of India’s palaces, accented by contemporary lighting and seating. Our traditional menu complimented by continental gourmet desserts is a fresh take on East meets the West.
